Trout and Grayling Rules On the trout and grayling waters, maximum bag limits, minimum size limits and allowable methods are kept under review and specified for each water to conserve stocks. In addition, catch and release has become the norm for many anglers, particularly on the river stretches. Please note, however, that for the 2008 season all trout and grayling fishing on club water’s, will be fly only between March 15th-October 6th.
Salmon Catch and Release Guidelines Pitlochry Angling Club strongly supports the
policy of “catch and release” as a method to conserve and improve fisheries.
We therefore urge anglers fishing club waters to show restraint and
to minimise the number of salmon and grilse that are retained. The club commends (on a voluntary basis) that in each angling season and for each club beat fished, that anglers release the first salmon caught, but may if they wish retain the second. The third and each alternate fish thereafter should also be released, to ensure that the majority of caught fish are always returned. Anglers may keep a running tally for each beat fished. If several salmon are caught in a single day, then no more than one should be retained.
Please note: On Lower Tummel we have agreed to follow Atholl Estate’s wishes that the C&R guidelines, for salmon, will be those issued by the TDSFB.
Although handling of fish to be released should be kept to a minimum, it may be possible to get a rough measurement of length to the fork of the tail. This may in turn be useful in estimating the weight of released fish. The estimates are more reliable if the girth immediately in front of the dorsal fin is also known. Ally Gowan’s excellent website http://www.letsflyfish.com provides a ready reckoner for estimating the weight of salmon from length (or length and girth) information.
The sale of rod-caught salmon and sea trout is now banned by law, but in any case, the sale of any fish (not just salmon and sea trout) caught on Club waters was banned by the Club several years ago.
